Yes, Nestopia works, but it is so stripped down from the PC version that it is disappointing. None of the other Mac NES emus work well at all, so this is really your only option. If you have a Mac and want to play old NES games on it then you’ll need Nestopia and Emulator Enhancer to be able to do that.
However, I’m a bit peeved that the original Nestopia offered controller support free of charge, but that option was taken away in the Mac version of Nestopia.

If you have Emulator Enhancer, which you can use for free but will eventually need to buy for $30 if you want all the features, you can connect USB controllers just fine. You can play around with the interface and the video in Preferences, but there aren’t as many options as other emulators. You can save an unlimited number of freeze states, but there is no in game save option. It also makes NES games look super dated.

I like full screen but it’s a bit fuzzy and out of focus. Nestopia on the Mac can emulate most NES games just fine, sure, but you only have two window size options: thumbnail or full screen. Nestopia for the Mac is a watered down version of the PC emulator. If you want controller support you need to download Emulator Enhancer. You need to have a Mac that runs on at least 600 mhz for Nestopia to work. Open it and you should be able to use Nestopia.
Just download the file and it will mount on your desktop. Bright Hub will not tell you where to find roms, so don’t ask. Acquiring roms that you do not own a hard copy of is illegal. Remember, to emulate NES games with Nestopia you need to have the NES roms. Sure, Nestopia works if you want to emulate NES games on your Mac at the barest level, but it could be so much more.
Unfortunately, the Mac version does not have all of the fancy emu stuff the PC version comes with.

Nearly any game is just a Google search away, and they’re all relatively tiny file sizes (Super Mario World is 45kb!). The legality of game ROM’s are often blurry at best, so you’ll have to find these ROM files on your own. If you already own the games for a physical NES, there’s an argument that you’re entitled to have the ROM because they function as a backup. NES game files are known as ROM’s, and despite being old titles some of the copyrights are still maintained which can put ROM’s into a legal grey area. You can download Nestopia directly from the developer.

Nestopia is a free download and requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later, and I’m running it perfectly in Mac OS X 10.6.6. Playing games is easy, either select them from the file browser in Nestopia, or you can drag them into the app, or once the filetype is associated (.nes ROM), just double click on a ROM file to play it. It’s called Nestopia, (get it, NEStopia?), and it has all the features you’ve come to expect from a good emulator: stability, freeze states, customizable keyboard controls, adjustable frame rates, and various display tweaks that can even emulate the funky NTSC connection.
